Minutes of the ATLAS Education and Outreach Committee http://atlas.ch

Co-coordinators: Michael Barnett and Erik Johansson

  • There was considerable discussion of the desire for and goals of the forthcoming election of the Outreach Coordinator.
  • 2000 copies of the ATLAS CDROM are available at ATLAS Secretariat (also from LBNL at Barnett @lbl.gov ). Includes the ATLAS movie in English, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, and Swedish.
  • Two new webcams showing the ATLAS cavern have been established by Marzio Nessi and can be seen at: http://atlas.web.cern.ch/Atlas/TCOORD/Activities/TcOffice/
    Scheduling/Installation/UX15webcams.html
  • A new poster for the public will be mass produced in the near future. It can be seen at: http://atlas.ch/atlas_poster_2003/
  • Committee saw the set of four Swedish posters covering ATLAS work and ATLAS physics. These are now finished. They have been printed at CERN in size 70 by 100 cm. Each Swedish Atlas group will receive a handful of sets. Two of the posters will be printed in size A2 in larger quantitites for distribution to schools and interested teachers.
  • Possible ideas for improved event images were shown.
  • There is a new Flash-animation showing protons being accelerated through the booster rings and into the LHC, and then colliding inside ATLAS leading to an event. This is available in Flash format for webpages and as AVI files for placing into PowerPoint. This is available from the ATLAS public page http://atlas.ch or http://atlas.ch/multimedia/index.html
  • An ATLAS visit in the West Area has been established and new very large posters placed at these sites that describe ATLAS.
  • It is hoped that work will restart in the near future on a "spinoff" brochure (showing applications derived from work by ATLAS physicists).
  • An excellent new 3D animation of the installation of ATLAS in the cavern commissioned by Marzio/Nessi has been completed and can be downloaded from http://atlas.web.cern.ch/Atlas/TCOORD/Activities/Installation/film.htm
  • A 3D animated movie produced by the Portuguese group led by Amelia Maio will continue development. It is aimed at the general public and will show the structure of ATLAS , will show how particles interact with the various detector components, and will show events.
  • Development of content for an ATLAS DVD continues. It will contain the movie (in the nine languages) with videotape quality, the Nessi installation animation, and possibly other content (depending on timing and availability)..
  • A new brochure for the public is under development.
  • There was discussion of the Outreach budget.
  • The ATLAS watch and T-shirt are available (produced by M. Nordberg and C. Potter respectively).
  • There was a report of plans of the European Particle Physics Outreach Group. A short summary is shown below.

European Particle Physics Outreach Group (EPOG)

  • Memo to funding bodies: EPOG + HEPP + ECFA
    • Recognise outreach as a natural part of scientific research activities
    • An important activity in increasing the interest in science
    • Make financing available for professional outreach activities
  • World Year of Physics 2005
    • 100th Anniversary of 1905, an extraordinary year for physics.
    • Masterclasses all over Europe! (Michael Kobel asked to coordinate).
  • CERN's 50th Anniversary 2004 Masterclasses or something similar all over Europe!
  • InterActions.org
    • SLAC, Fermilab, CERN, DESY etc project
    • A resource for communicators of particle physics
